Chairman’s Report 2007
Yet another great year has passed at UCT Ballroom, once again proving itself to be one of the biggest and definitely the most active societies at UCT. A continuous stream of mind blowing social events, created an incredible vibe amongst new and old members alike, gaining the art of dance a new host of unsuspecting fans.
The year started off with a blast. The “old school” social for past members, showed how many people always come back for more. Whipping out school clothes untouched for years, the old members set the tone for 2007.The year went from strength to strength as the beginners surprised themselves by going out to dance on Saturday nights. Once again all scored great marks at our annual Medal Tests, showing how the most unlikely people get addicted to dance.
A large team from UCT once again stormed Intervarsity nationals at Pretoria and added plenty of trophies to mantelpieces in Cape Town, retaining the team dance shield as UCT’s. Shortly following Intervarsity was our annual formal dinner dance, the first to be held at Jameson Hall in recent memory. With some willing hands, some amazing planning, and a great team effort the hall was transformed into a spectacular scene that will be remembered in years to come.
Our fortnightly socials were brought to a dramatic conclusion by the Farewell Dance for Maureen Shargey, UCT’s head Coach for over 30 years. People came from far and wide to pay their respects to one of South Africa’s premier coaches, known worldwide as a stamp of quality on a dancer. On that note we have the Honour of welcoming our new Coach. Iliana Ianovska, an international Judge and Coach, has been actively involved with UCT dancing for 5 years. We are fortunate to gain such a worthy successor to an irreplaceable Maureen.
All in all 2007 was another great success. Congratulations to the committee on producing such a wonderful year. We survived the year’s trials in great style, all for the love of dance. Thanks guys, it was easily the best committee I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.
As always… see you on the dance floor.

Introducing Iliana
My name is Iliana Ianovska. I have danced since I was a child. Dancing has been my favorite hobby and turned into my profession. I was a ballroom champion of my country Bulgaria in 1997 and 1998 and now I am a coach and international adjudicator in dance sport. I have lived for some years in Brazil where I have studied and taught authentic Latin-American dances such as Brazilian samba, Salsa and Argentine tango. I cannot imagine my life without dancing. It gives unforgettable experiences and the emotional satisfaction of doing something beautiful together with a partner. Through dancing one meets interesting people and makes lasting friendships. Everybody can dance. It requires you only to spare some of your time to come to the dancing hall in a good mood and with the desire to learn. In exchange you will feel relaxed and charged with energy at the same time.
Yours sincerely,
Iliana
